Event Details

Thursday Night Open Mic! A Busboys and  Poetry Event   For two hours audiences can expect a diverse chorus of voices and a vast array of professional spoken word performers, open mic rookies, musicians and a different host every week.

Tonight's open mic hosted by 2Deep
2Deep has certainly made a name for herself in the poetry community since 2006 by performing at Ottawa University (Canada), Cornell University, and opening for the late Gill Scott-Heron in 2009. She was a member of Busboys and Poets’ 2009 Slam Team, Word War II Champion, and served as the Busboys and Poets' Slam Master. Currently, she’s selling her book, Spoken Heard, and stays busy with her blog, 2DeepUncensored. 2Deep welcomes the life lessons, as they make for beautiful and honest poetry.

Ainsley BurroughsInternationally acclaimed poet, Ainsley Burrows has performed at festivals, cafés and institutions across Europe, America, Canada and the Caribbean, receiving numerous awards. These include Best International Performer of 2001 and 2002 from the Farrago Poetry Café in London, Munich’s International Poetry Slam Championship award in 2001 and awards from the Nuyorican Poet’s Café in 2001 (for participating in the National team) and the in 2004 (for being the Coach of the National team). In addition, Ainsley has conducted many workshops from London’s Hackney Community College to New York’s Julliard School of Music.

To date, Ainsley has published two collections of poetry, Black Angels with Sky Blue Feathers and The Woman Who Isn't Was and released four audio discs Cataclysm, The Groove Electric, Climax, and Rockstar. His work has also been anthologized in several books including Planet Slam, TwentyFourTwo, and Graphic Poetry. In 2007, Ainsley was the opening act for the successful Reggae Cabaret series in New York, featuring legendary reggae artists such as Toots & the Maytals, Marcia Griffiths, Third World and the Skatalites. Ainsley along with his band, Arson Class, performed in a promotional concert for MTV's Band in the Bubble series in May 2007. He has also appeared on BETJ’s “Word Sound Power”; New York Linkz TV, Brooklyn Community Access Television and Manhattan Neighborhood Network television and his music has been programmed on Music Choice.

In August, 2007, Ainsley embarked on his 10th Babylon by Foot tour which took the literary powerhouse to 75 cities across United States, Canada, and the European Union. For 2008, Ainsley is set to release his fifth recording, EVOLVER on the Burrows Ink record label. The ten track disc full of socio-political musings coupled with hypnotic, pulsating rhythms showcases Ainsley in superb form. His lyrics, musical arrangement and banging delivery set EVOLVER apart from all his other releases. Tracks like, Torres, Freedom and Baby will have listeners debating whether Ainsley is poet, politician or social warrior. Adjectives like “Brilliant” and “Masterful” aptly describe this latest effort. With EVOLVER, Ainsley Burrows has raised the bar once more, such that fellow poets and spoken work artists are forced to take notice. Ainsley has several projects slated for the coming months: the as-yet unpublished novel Land of My Birth - a coming of age novel based in the Caribbean, touches on issues of politics, religion, suicide, insanity and other topics that have long been considered taboo by people of Caribbean descent and he recently completed his first script entitled Black California. The smart, sharp, witty screenplay is written in the style of Pulp Fiction, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and Snatch, but for an all black cast. Ainsley Burrows will be appearing in a venue near yo
