This Is My Brave is a platform for people living with ‪mental illness to speak out in an effort to raise awareness and end the stigma.

Join us for the debut production of “This Is My Brave – The Show” on May 18, 2014 at Artisphere’s Spectrum Theatre, Arlington, VA. A live presentation of touching essays, original music, and poetry will be performed by a dozen individuals living with―or loving someone with―a mental illness. The power of the human connection through the telling of personal experiences will grab hold of the audience for the show’s ninety minutes and beyond.

One in four adults - approximately 61.5 million Americans - experiences mental illness in a given year. But statistics show that only about 1 in 3 receives the treatment they need. This may be due in part to the underlying stigma associated with mental illness.

“BE THE CHANGE YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD” -Gandhi

This Is My Brave is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a mission to ignite and actively promote―through actions and social media― a positive, supportive national conversation about mental illness for those who live with, or love someone who lives with, a mental illness. Through the sharing of stories and experiences of those in recovery, we expect to provide a sense of community and hope; and encourage others to share their stories. We believe that each time one of us shares our story, there’s another crack helping to break down the stigma of mental illness. It’s time to be brave and bring mental health issues into the spotlight because they’ve been in the dark too long.

We believe in the power of community. There’s strength found in people coming together to propel a movement forward which is why we created our organization.

Beyond our initial performance of the first ever This Is My Brave show, we plan on continuing our mission of encouraging open dialogue surrounding mental illness by various fundraising and educational events throughout the year. Our first major goal after the show wraps up in May is to begin to work on a programming package to take a smaller version of our show into our local high schools. A 5k plus family fun run/walk, mental health awareness movie screenings, and open mic events are all on our list of plans for the remainder of 2014. Your donation will help facilitate the on-going growth and expansion of This Is My Brave and will allow us to continue this important work which we are so passionate about.

This Is My Brave is a theater experience which will change your perception of what it feels like to live with a mental illness.
