The Frida Cinema needs a new marquee! To help make this happen, our friends at Gay Neighbors, Families, and Friends of Santa Ana have enlisted the help of Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer, Rosalind Russell, and a cast of dozens of classic cinema women – and a strong martini or two – for a special fundraiser we’re calling Martini & Movie For the Marquee presents THE WOMEN!
Famous for being the first major Hollywood production to feature an exclusive all-female cast, George Cukor’s 1939 comedy-drama The Women is an outrageous, laugh-a-minute riot that follows a group of “friends” as they grapple with gossip, affairs, gossip, marriage, love, divorce, and more gossip. Based on a play by Clare Boothe Luce,The Women features 130 speaking roles – and every single one of them, women. Remade three times (as the 1956 musical comedy The Opposite Sex, the 1977 tele-picWomen in New York, and as contemporary-actress-showcase The Women in 2008 featuring Meg Ryan, Eva Mendes, and Bette Midler, among many others), the originalThe Women is one of the Golden Age of Hollywood’s most influential and groundbreaking films.
Your gift of $25 not only gets you a classic cinema experience on the big screen, but also a martini courtesy of our friends at GNFFSA! (Bring your ID’s!!) Proceeds from this event will support our efforts to upgrade our 4th Street-facing marquee, and to further beautify our home for art house cinema in downtown Santa Ana.
Can’t make it to this screening? Please consider making a donation towards our Marquee Improvement by choosing “I can’t make it, but would love to lend my support!” option, and supporting our efforts to continue to make The Frida as beautiful a home for cinema as our community, and the art of cinema, deserves!
