Built on a remarkable site and designed by the well-known architect Renzo Piano, the Whitney’s new building is now under construction and is scheduled to open in 2015. The structural engineer is the firm of Robert Silman Associates in New York City. This new building will include more than 50,000 square feet of indoor galleries, 13,000 square feet of outdoor exhibition space on a series of rooftops facing the High Line, and the largest column-free museum gallery in New York City of 18,000 square feet for temporary exhibitions. A large cantilevered entrance will shelter an outdoor plaza close to the southern entrance of the High Line. The building will also have an education center, a 170-seat theater with views on the Hudson River, a conservation lab, a library, a gift shop and some restaurants. The design takes a strong asymmetrical form. The upper stories stretch toward the Hudson River on the west side, and step back from the elevated High Line on the east side.

In this seminar, the project’s main structural engineer, Mr. Alastair C. Elliott, PE LEED AP and an Associate at Robert Silman Associates will discuss some of the structural design aspects of this project and the engineering challenges the team had to face.
