A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE VEX 1977-1984 / 2012-PRESENT>>
The Vex was a staple in the live music community until it's closing in 1984. The Vex was known for bridging the gap between Hollywood and Orange County at a time when few bands traveled out of their own neighborhoods.
The VEX began in the late 70's amidst Los Angeles' East Side, catering to the emerging Punk Rock and New Wave scene. The founder of the VEX, Joe Suquette, also known as Joe VEX, had a vision of bringing the Visual Arts together with the Performing Arts. With much success and popularity in doing so, he opened the doors to many artists whom had limited opportunities to express their art at the time.
Today, the VEX's legacy is just as strong as it was during its' successful years. Joe has been contacted by many publications to write articles about Joe and the VEX. With that interest, the continual persuasion from many of the artists and musicians to tell his story , as well as to resurrect THE VEX AS A MULTI FUNCTIONAL ART CENTER
THE RETURN OF THE VEX AFTER CLOSING ITS' DOORS IN 1984. JOE VEX HAS DECIDED BRING BACK THE LENDGENARY MUSIC VENUE, THE VEX!!!
Joe vex was known for creating a culture clash in music in the barrios of East Los Angeles and El Sereno areas. He introduced a sound and image that rocked the neighborhoods of these areas. By promoting new wave and punk rock Joe Vex was able to shake up the streets of Brooklyn Ave (NOW KNOWN AS CEASER CHAVEZ BLVD ) AND THE VEX ON SOTO ST IN EL SERENO.
HE BROUGHT FORTH BANDS LIKE BLACK FLAG, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, THE DAMNED, MAU-MAUS, THE CRAMPS, SOCIAL DISTORTION, CIRCLE JERKS, TSOL, and ADOLESENCES AND MANY MORE... BY Promoting CONCERTS AND SHOWS OF THIS CALIBUR, The Vex was set to become an icon in the Los Angeles music ARENA.
BECAUSE OF HIS PIONEERING EFFORTS THE VEX IS NOW IN THE ARCHIVES THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME, THE SMITHSONIAN MUSEUM, LACMA, AND MANY OTHERS MUSEUMS. THROUGHOUT THE YEARS ARTISTS AND CURATORS HAVE HELPED TO KEEP THE NAME OF THE VEX MOVING IN A POSITIVE DIRECTION by doing art shows in galleries and museums.
THIS TIME AROUND THE VEX arts COMES BACK WITH A TWIST.. JOE VEX HAS DECIDED to ADD TO THE LINE UP, FASHION, PERFORMING ARTS, CHOIRS, ART GALLERY, DANCE AND MUCH MORE TO IT’S MENU…BUT ROCK & ROLL WILL STILL REMAIN THE SAME."
