WelcometotheUpperClass.com is proud to present the University of Maryland #NewLeaders Summit, an interactive forum designed for college students to experience principles of Success, Leadership, and Entrepreneurship directly from notable officials & distinguished entrepreneurs.
Speakers are asked to simply share a concise, candid story about what college students graduating in the next 5 years need to do to not only get jobs, but to actually create jobs and make an impact greater than their average collegiate counterparts. The message is intended to be general enough to apply to every student from any educational background or major, yet focused on three very key principles that are instrumental in truly making a dent in the universe.
The summit provides students the opportunity to meet the speakers, special guests in attendance, and their staff for extensive networking. Students will have the opportunity to garner support for ideas & companies that they hope to develop in the future as well. For students that have developed ANY type of goals for themselves relating to their future, are potentially considering entrepreneurship, or have just decided that they want to avoid being among the millions of college students moving back home without jobs or opportunities after graduation, the #NewLeaders Summit will be a impactful event.
The #NewLeaders Summit will be held on December 9th, 2013 in the Hoff Theatre inside the Stamp Student Union at the University of Maryland - College Park.
The summit format allows for each keynote speaker to deliver a twenty-minute "pep talk" on the topic of success, leadership, or entrepreneurship.. The audience is encouraged to weigh in during the question and answer periods. Additionally, there will be designated "Twitter Time" & social media periods where students can engage online. The most active audience members will win gift cards and prizes. We ask that all students come to the summit prepared for intense motivation and conversation, as this is the perfect opportunity to forge lasting future relationships. The long-term focus of each Summit is to redirect each campus towards achievement, success, and a commitment to Changing the World both before and after graduation.
Dr. Winslow Sargeant, Chief Counsel of Advocacy for the U.S. Small Business Administration:
Dr. Winslow Sargeant is the sixth Chief Counsel for Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy, appointed by President Obama August 19, 2010. The Office of Advocacy is an independent voice for small business within the federal government with a mission of encouraging policies that support small business start-up, growth, and development.
Dr. Sargeant sees the entrepreneurial spirit as uniquely American and as a path to wealth and job creation—a thread that runs through his life story. Most recently, he served as managing director of Venture Investors, LLC, in Madison, Wisconsin. The firm provided seed and early-stage money to high-potential health care and IT companies. There, he specialized in computer software, hardware, and materials, and worked with technology transfer offices.
And Dr. Sargeant knows the challenges of starting and building a small firm. He enrolled in a PhD. Program at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1988 and left in 1992 to work at IBM in Rochester, Minnesota. He received his PhD in electrical engineering in 1995, and worked at ATT/Bell Labs in Allentown, Pennsylvania. In 1997, Dr. Sargeant and partners co-founded Aanetcom, a “fabless” semiconductor integrated circuit design company. The company designed state-of the-art computer circuits for telecom and broadband applications. In March 2000, Aanetcom was acquired by PMC-Sierra, a publicly traded company.
Douglas F. Gansler, Attorney General for the State of Maryland:
Douglas F. Gansler was elected on November 7, 2006, as Maryland's 44th Attorney General. In that election, Mr. Gansler received the most votes of any candidate in the State of Maryland. Since that election, Mr. Gansler has been elected as the national Co-Chair for the Democratic Attorneys General Association. He has also been appointed to the Executive Committee of the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG), the national Co-Chair of NAAG’s Environmental Committee, the national Co-Chair of NAAG’s Youth Access to Alcohol Committee, and the Vice-President of NAAG’s Eastern Region. As Attorney General, Mr. Gansler has focused on environmental, public safety, and consumer issues. He also co-chairs the statewide Human Trafficking Task Force.
Prior to becoming Attorney General, Mr. Gansler served as State’s Attorney for Montgomery County, the largest jurisdiction in Maryland. While he is most widely known for leading the Joint Sniper Task Force and successfully prosecuting John Mohammed and Lee Boyd Malvo for the six murders they committed in Maryland, as well as his prosecution of boxer Mike Tyson, Mr. Gansler personally tried many other cases. In 2002, the citizens resoundingly supported Mr. Gansler’s innovative and effective approach to prosecution by re-electing him with the highest number of votes for any state candidate in any jurisdiction in the history of Maryland.
Before becoming State’s Attorney, Mr. Gansler served as Assistant United States Attorney, where he personally prosecuted over 1,000 cases involving almost every conceivable type of crime, including public corruption, hate crimes, narcotic trafficking, sex offenses, child abuse, economic crimes, gang-related violence, and homicides. As a federal prosecutor, Mr. Gansler’s most notable case was the successful prosecution of a drunk-driving diplomat who killed a 16-year-old Maryland girl near Dupont Circle, in Washington, D.C. In addition to his prosecutorial experience, Mr. Gansler practiced civil litigation with the law firms of Coburn & Schertler and Howrey & Simon.
Since his high school days, when he interned for Senator Birch Bayh (D-IN) and Senator Bill Bradley (D-NJ), Mr. Gansler has been involved in Democratic politics. During college, Mr. Gansler co-chaired the 1984 presidential campaign for Gary Hart at Yale. In 1992, Mr. Gansler served as the Montgomery County Field Director for Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD). In 2008, Mr. Gansler served as the Maryland Co-Chair for the presidential campaign of Senator Barack Obama (D-IL).
