One of the biggest challenges facing a new startup is finding the funding to build it and bring it to market. How do you find investors? If you find funding, how do you then allocate those funds to give you the longest runway possible? Should you pay yourself a salary?
Billy O’Grady is currently Vice President and Relationship Managerat Silicon Valley Bank. He will be relocating to Los Angeles in May 2014 to support the early stage technology eco-system.His primary focus will be developing relationships with founders, CEOs and other c-level management team members. For the past six years, O’Grady had been supporting the San Diego market’s biopharma and technology practice. He’ll be joining a team of 25 SVBers that are already located in-market.
O’Grady participated in thecorporate development and finance rotation programs with Xerox Corp. and PetcoAnimial Supplies before joining SVB. Part-time baseball enthusiast, he also spent a few seasons advance scouting for a major league baseball team and originally hails from Rochester, NY where he attended St. John Fisher College.
Barry O’Brien is a Managing Director within SVB’s Venture Capital and Private Equity Group. His primary focus is Corporate Venture Capital. O’Brien is responsible for globally developing and fostering long term relationships with the venture units and innovation teams of Fortune 500 Companies.
Preceding his career at SVB, O’Brien was a Diplomatic Officer in the Irish Foreign Service. There, he served as Vice Consul of Ireland to the United States having previously had postings in Dublin and Belfast. Before joining the Foreign Service, O’Brien worked as a strategy consultant at both BearingPoint in Dublin and PricewaterhouseCoopers in Sydney.
Born in Dublin, Ireland, O’Brien attended University College Dublin and UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School, where he was awarded with a bachelor’s degree in Economics and a master’s degree in Business Studies. Currently he is on the Advisory Board for IBM Health XL. In 2010, O’Brien co-founded the American Ireland Fund’s Young Leaders Chapter in San Francisco. In 2013 Business and Finance magazine named him among their “Global 100”.
