San Francisco Silent Film Festival and California Historical Society present

The Restoration of THE LAST EDITION

a presentation by Rob Byrne and David Kiehn

Though perhaps not lost, THE LAST EDITION, a 1925 drama featuring the San Francisco Chronicle and filmed on location at the Chronicle Building and around San Francisco, was certainly forgotten -- until early 2012, when San Francisco Silent Film Festival board president Rob Byrne had the opportunity to examine the last surviving print at an archive in the Netherlands. The discovery of this singular original nitrate, a color tinted and toned Dutch print in the collection of EYE Film Institute Netherlands, kicked off a year-long project to restore the film and bring it to new life for contemporary audiences.  Following sixteen months of painstaking research, translation, frame-by-frame image restoration, and color tint recreation, the complete restored feature is finally ready for its return to the big screen.

On Tuesday, July 16, join film preservationist Rob Byrne and historian David Kiehn at the California Historical Society for a unique behind-the-scenes story of the restoration project, as well as the history of the film and filmmaker Emory Johnson. The presentation will include selected stills and clips from the film - many of them featuring an incredible look at San Francisco circa 1925!  This new restoration of THE LAST EDITION will have its world premiere on July 21, 2013 at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival in the magnificent Castro Theatre.
