Event Details

Employees do not check all of their privacy rights at the door on day one of employment.  Nevertheless, employers can, and often do, intrude upon the private affairs of employees.  Sometimes, this is even proper and lawful!  Regulating private, even off-duty conduct to require conformity with employer expectations may be appropriate under certain circumstances. But once employers obtain private information it must be kept confidential.  This lively discussion will touch upon such topics as workplace romances, drug and alcohol testing, surveillance, monitoring internet and email use, searches, social media, investigations, medical information, pre-employment screening, and others of interest to employers in Oregon.

Instructor: Jennifer Germundson is the manager of the Bureau of Labor and Industries Technical Assistance for Employers Program.  Prior to joining BOLI in 2006, Jennifer was a field office manager with the Oregon Employment Department.  Her background includes human resource management, labor relations, unemployment insurance adjudication, and recruitment.

Guest Speaker: Ruth Miles, Small Business Advocate (Ombudsman) from the Oregon Secretary of States Office
Introducing a new opportunity and resource for small business to have contact to share feedback about interactions with Staete of Oregon Agencies.

Specific topics will include:
> Background and Credit Checks / Drug and Alcohol Testing / Genetic or Medical Information
> On-Duty & Off-Duty Conduct / Post-Termination Issues
> Social Media / Cell Phones
> Searches (Personal Space / Computers)
