When & Where
Jimmyjane + Arkitektura’s Design Assembly
For over a decade, Betony Vernon and Ethan Imboden have each worked in their own styles and mediums to reimagine the design of pleasure products and the social context that surrounds them. In celebration of the release of Vernon’s new book, The Boudoir Bible – The Uninhibited Sex Guide for Today, we invite you to join us for a candid conversation between these pioneering designers as they share their experiences of exploring – and remapping – the boundaries of sexual culture, taboo, pleasure and provocation.
Betony Vernon is a boundary-defying designer and sex educator based in Paris and Milan. She and her eponymous brand intervene at the intersection of fashion, sex and psychology, with the goal of empowering women and men to enjoy and share greater pleasure. During the course of her career, Vernon has designed for Missoni, Gianfranco Ferré, Alexander Wang and Fornasetti, and her work has been featured in numerous international exhibitions, from London’s Victoria and Albert Museum to the Triennale, Milan. She studied art history and metalsmithing at Virginia Commonwealth University, and received her Masters in Industrial Design from Domus Academy, Milan.
Ethan Imboden is a designer and entrepreneur who leverages design as a fulcrum for change and market disruption. In 2003, he founded Jimmyjane with the goal of bringing “Pleasure to the People” – and the intention of upending the sex accessories industry along the way. Prior to Jimmyjane, Imboden worked as an engineer on the Human Genome Project, followed by a decade in brand and product innovation with some of the world's leading design firms, including Arnell Group, ECCO Design, and Frogdesign. He holds a BS in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science from Johns Hopkins and his Masters in Industrial Design from Pratt Institute.
Jimmyjane designs products and experiences to provide pleasure, strengthen connection and create provocative possibility. Since launching in 2004, Jimmyjane has leveraged design, innovation and wit to introduce a new generation of vibrators and other pleasure products, elevating the category into the mainstream spotlight. Jimmyjane is the only brand of its kind to be honored with the world’s top design accolades (IDEA Awards from Fast Company and BusinessWeek, GOOD Design Awards, AIGA Awards, Spark Awards) and to appear regularly in leading publications, including Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, WWD, Esquire and GQ.
Arkitektura’s Design Assembly is a unique and ongoing series of talks, exhibitions, discussions and events with globally recognized influential figures from across the design disciplines. We aim to create opportunity for the broad and dynamic design communities in the Bay Area to assemble, share ideas and engage in discourse. This is where creative minds connect. Past speakers include Naoto Fukasawa and Giulio Cappellini.
