Deciding the News That's Fit to Print
Jill Abramson, Executive Editor, The New York Times
In Conversation with Robert J. Rosenthal, Executive Director, The Center for Investigative Reporting
As executive editor of The New York Times, Abramson is the highest ranking person in that newsroom and the first woman to ever have the title. She oversees The New York Times news report in all its various print, digital and mobile platforms. Abramson says that as a born-and-raised New Yorker, she considered being named editor of the Times to be like "ascending to Valhalla. In my house growing up, the Times substituted for religion.” Abramson was previously the managing editor, in which post she helped guide the newsroom through a particularly turbulent period covering two wars, four national elections, hurricanes and oil spills. She joined The New York Times in 1997, becoming Washington editor in 1999 and then bureau chief in 2000. She was previously a deputy bureau chief and an investigative reporter at The Wall Street Journal.
