In 1866, Zion Baptist church was founded by former slaves and was nurtured for a number of years as members worshipped in a brush arbor. In 1888, the structure at the corner of Lemon and Hayes Streets was erected. For 90 years, the congregation worshipped and grew there. Then in 1978, a new sanctuary was built across Lemon Street and the original building eventually fell into disrepair.

In 1990, the original building was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places. In 1997, the church later launched a renovation project, which culminated in the re-opening of the original structure which was renamed The Old Zion Heritage Museum. The Old Zion Heritage Museum opened its doors in October 2003. Under the leadership of Pastor Harris T. Travis and using its history as the oldest black church in Marietta, the vision of the museum is "dedicated to the preservation of the history, art, and culture of the Black community in Cobb County."

The Old Zion Heritage Museum is on the list of participating tourist sites for the Annual Christmas Pilgrimage. The museum strives to preserve the heritage of Black culture by hosting yearly Black History Programs, Emancipation Proclamation Observances, tours for the community and Gospel musical programs. Old Zion Heritage Museum still has some of the original pews and other relics of the past.
