The New Jersey Medical School Global Tuberculosis Institute is the tuberculosis Regional Training and Medical Consultation Center for the northeastern United States

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION & OVERALL GOAL

The purpose of this training is to strengthen providers’ knowledge of tuberculosis and health communication strategies.  This training utilizes lectures, discussions, and interactive breakout sessions.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This training is designed for nurses, community health workers, physicians, and public health professionals.

WHY COURSE IS NEEDED

As the incidence of tuberculosis continues to decline, maintaining clinical and public health expertise in TB is particularly challenging. This training aims to build the TB knowledge base of clinical and public health staff to facilitate appropriate risk assessment, testing, and treatment of TB.

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

·         Apply current recommendations for the risk assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of TB in order to effectively treat latent TB infection

·         Integrate health communication strategies to ensure patients understand their diagnosis and treatment plan

·         Utilize strategies for finding quality health information in order to guide patients to appropriate resources

·         Define health literacy in the context of TB programs in order to engage TB patients in a sensitive, accessible manner

·         Assess patient attitudes and beliefs towards latent TB infection with the aim of improving communicaion and treatment completion

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

In order to meet the learning objectives and receive continuing education credits, participants are required to attend the entire conference and complete an evaluation. A post-course follow up evaluation will be sent to participants within 2 months of the conference.

Professions (262CMR 7.00), Board of Certification of Health Officers (241CMR 4.03), Board of Registration of Sanitarians (255CMR 5.02).

 

MAPHN Education and Professional Practice is an approved provider of Continuing Nursing Education by the MASSACHUSETTS ASSOCIATION OF REGISTERED NURSES, INC., an ACCREDITED APPROVER by the AMERICAN NURSES CREDENTIALING CENTER’S COMMISSION ON ACCREDITATION. TRAVEL INFORMATION

 

The conference will be held at the Hoagland Pincus Conference Center, 222 Maple Ave, Shrewsbury MA.

 

From Main Campus/Downtown Worcester:

Take Route 9 East over the Lake Quinsigamond Bridge. At third set of traffic

lights after the bridge, bear left onto Maple Avenue (intersection marked by Fairlawn Shopping Center, Chili's Restaurant). Follow Maple Avenue to top of hill. Turn left at the maroon sign for University of Massachusetts Medical School Worcester Foundation Campus. The Hoagland-Pincus Conference Center is on the right.

 

From Route 9 West:

Westbound from Westborough Rte. 495: Proceed West past Route 140 in Shrewsbury, continue to the second stop light. This is Oak Street; there will be a bowling alley on the right. Turn Right on Oak Street, and proceed until you reach a stop sign. This is Maple Avenue. The entrance to the conference center is directly across the street. The Hoagland-Pincus Conference Center is the first building on the right.

 

From the Mass Pike (I-90):

Westbound from Boston: Take exit 11A to Route 495 North to Route 9 West.

Eastbound from Springfield: Take Exit 10 to Route 290 East.

 

From I-290:

Eastbound from Auburn: Proceed on Route 290 East to Exit 22 - Main Street,

Shrewsbury. Take Exit 22, at end of ramp take a right onto Main Street.

Westbound from Marlborough: Proceed on Route 290 West to Exit 22 - Main Street,

Shrewsbury. Take exit 22, at end of the ramp take a left onto Main Street.

 

Once on Main Street, Shrewsbury:

Proceed on Main Street through the first set of lights and up the hill. Take right onto Gage Lane (the first right after passing St. John's High School). Follow Gage Lane to the end. Turn right onto Maple Avenue. Proceed one half mile, turn right at the maroon sign for UMMS Worcester Foundation Campus. The Hoagland-Pincus Conference Center is the first building on the right.
