Event Details

Maye CavallaroJohnny Mercer is best known as a lyricist. He wrote with dozens of composers including Hoagy Carmichael (“Skylark”), Richard Whiting (“Too Marvelous for Words”), Henry Mancini (“Moon River”) and Harold Arlen (“Come Rain or Come Shine.”) He was also a popular singer. He wrote the lyrics to more than fifteen hundred songs, including compositions for movies and Broadway shows. He received nineteen Academy Award nominations, and won four. In this 3-part workshop students are provided with 10 lead sheets of Mercer’s compositions. Students learn songs as a group, listen to various recordings and then try out the songs with an accompanist. Both singers and instrumentalists are welcome to expand their repertoire. All levels welcome.

Week 1: 10 lead sheets provided. Students learn about Johnny Mercer’s compositions and listen to recordings and learn and sing songs in class. Week 2: Further working on songs from the Johnny Mercer collection, learning new songs and listening and singing. Week 3: A professional accompanist joins the class and students try out their own interpretations of Johnny Mercer compositions.
