The Joe Santora Trio
Originally from Buffalo, NY, Joe studied piano from 1956 –1969. In 1969 he did a 6 month tour with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra followed by 6 month active duty status with the Army Reserve at Ft Jackson SC. Upon his return to Buffalo, Joe resumed his classical studies in piano and professional career as a Jazz Pianist, leading various groups in Buffalo, Boston, Detroit, Toronto and Rochester. Joe was instrumental in starting the vocal jazz careers of Nancy Kelly and Robin McKelle, both nationally recognized artists. After a three year stint (1976-1979), with Kelly playing the Philadelphia/Atlantic city circuit he settled in Rochester where he was recruited as the pianist/composer with Cabo Frio and toured/recorded with the band from 1980-1990. Shortly thereafter, Joe completed his Masters Degree in Jazz Performance from the Eastman School of Music. He went on to a 10 year Professorship, both developing and directing the jazz program at Roberts Wesleyan College where he met Emily, then 22. At her audition for the Jazz program he was convinced that he had never heard such vocally produced improvisational skills especially in someone so young. Since his retirement, he has been performing with Emily and in 2010 was joined by Curtis Kendrick of Cabo Frio.
Curtis developed his writing abilities early on in his young life and and became a prolific songwriter for Cabo Frio. The jazz group Cabo Frio, started playing big concerts and opening for national jazz acts for the first few years. During that time, the group was introduced to Ricky Schulz, head of Zebra Records, who later signed Cabo Frio to MCA records. The band started touring and reached #11 on the Billboard Jazz Charts with their 1986 smash Right on the Money. Individually, Curtis has performed on the Arsenio Hall Show and co-arranged and performed the new music theme for the sitcom, The New Leave It To Beaver Show on the Fox network. Curtis has been a featured artist with Chuck Mangoine, the late Cab Calloway and Steve Gadd on The Landmarks In Music compilation CD of New York State. Curtis has been a support act for Kenny G, Spyro Gyra, Joe Sample, Yellow Jackets, Jeff Lorber, Pieces of A Dream, Cedric Dent of Take 6, Luther Barnes, Phoebe Snow, and the late Lou Rawls. Curtis received a proclamation from the Mayor of Rochester New York as a Landmark In Music. Now after three decades of recording, Curtis is releasing his first solo CD entitled, Stright Up. The prospects for 2012 look great for Curtis-- the new jazz CD should be released in April of 2012, and touring will follow as fans request his music on stations all over the es and abroad.
Emily Kirchoff has been singing with Santora since 2005 in and around the Rochester, NY area, most notably at Michael’s Valley Grill in Penfield. As a teenager she was given a National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts Scholarship. Emily also received Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra’s Young Artist Jazz Award, the first vocalist to do so. A graduate of Penfield High School, she studied violin at Park Avenue Suzuki. She attended the Eastman School of Music where she continued to enjoy many performing opportunities. Emily is a cantor and choir member at St. Thomas More Parish and a Licensed Practical Nurse.
