THE JEWS OF TIMBUKTU
In 1994, Ismael Diadie Haidara, a Muslim historian in Timbuktu, Mali learned that his family was descended from Jews. He began a decade-long quest to build a community of Muslims who identify with the Jewish people and seek the support of Jews from around the world.
Rick Gold, a specialist in international development programming who served 29 years in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Agency for International Development, will share his experience working with the Jews of Timbuktu. Since 2004, he has managed and overseen international programs focusing on assisting democratic development, the rule of law and human rights. He led program development and implementation for the USAID Democracy and Governance Office in Mali from 1993-1997, where he made contact with the Jews of Timbuktu. He is a former President of Machar, The Washington, D.C. Congregation for Secular Humanistic Judaism.
The City Congregation is a diverse and welcoming community serving secular and cultural Jews throughout the New York City area.
