In the spirit of the Beaux Arts Ball, the Art Deco Society of Virginia will present its first Jazz Age Preservation Ball on January 19, 2013. This Roaring '20s gala is designed to raise awareness and funds for Art Deco preservation projects in the Commonwealth. This year’s benefactor is the Byrd Theatre Foundation.
Taking place at the Beaux-Arts styled Bolling Haxall House, the Preservation Ball will feature a live music by The John Winn Jazz All-Stars, dancing chorus girls, a special performance by Richmond’s dancing flapper duo, The Garter Snaps, complimentary Charleston dance lessons, a silent and live auction, food, drinks, dancing and more! All with the proceeds going toward the Byrd Theatre Foundation.
Built in 1928, the Byrd Theatre is one of the few Grand Movie Palaces remaining today. Adorned with hand-painted murals and a grandiose crystal chandelier, this opulent entertainment marvel has survived the last 80 years largely unaltered in appearance and use. However, time is beginning to take its toll. The theater needs an estimated $5 million in renovations to preserve this majestic theater for future generations to enjoy.
