The HIV Heterosexual Experience
Saturday, August 17, 2013 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Please join us Saturday, August 17, 2013 from 3:00pm - 7:00pm for the HIV Heterosexual Experience!
Living Without Limits Living Large Inc. and the Texas Black Women's Intiative Houston are hosting this event to bring together persons living with HIV, persons at risk for HIV and persons working in the fields of HIV prevention and care. This event will serve to heighten awareness of the disproportionate impact of HIV on African-American heterosexuals. AA heterosexuals continue to suffer levels of stigma that result in delayed testing, delayed access to care and lower rates of retention in care. We will therefore focus on the importance of treatment as prevention research and program implementation, including the influence that research has had on policies related to increasing routine testing, timely linkage to care and the timely start of HIV medication.
Participants will attend workshops and presentations to:
1. Increase their awareness of the disproportionate impact of HIV/AIDS on African-American heterosexuals in Texas.
2. Discuss and identify some common myths among African-American heterosexuals about the transmission of HIV/AIDS.
3. Better understand how stigma associated with HIV/AIDS impacts the African-American heterosexual community.
4. Gain knowledge on why treatment as prevention is important, the findings behind the research and ongoing research related to treatment as prevention, including HPTN 065 (TLC-Plus)-a current study that includes Houston, Tx as a comparison community.
Special guest speakers will conduct the workshops and make presentations. Community-based organizations (CBO's) will showcase their activities in a CBO village. Free HIV testing will be available. Participants will have opportunities to network during the CBO village and at dinner.
Please join us in this experience as we discuss... why our lives matter, the forgotten population and much, more more!
When & Where
Living Without Limits Living Large Inc. & Texas Black Women's Initiative Houston
Living Without Limits Living Large Inc. is a non-profit support group in Houston, Tx. We create an atmosphere where heterosexual people infected and affected with the diagnosis of HIV/AIDS can embrace everyday life with new beginnings and expectations. We empower individuals to stretch outside of the box, reach forward to the future, reach back to help others and enlarge their territory, teaching them there are no limits or boundaries to the future in store for them. We assist individuals to reach their hidden potential and to unlock, discover and activate their purpose for living. We challenge and inspire individuals to stand up and live life with meaning and effort.
The Texas Black Women's Initiative (TBWI) Houston is one of seven teams initiated in 2010 by the Texas Department of State Health Services to address the disproportionate impact of HIV on Black women in Texas. TBWI Houston members represent a diverse group of community-based organizations, public health department staff and individuals working to mobilize and empower Black women in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The Houston team has developed an action plan unique to the greater Houston area. The team is focusing on promotion of its WOW (Women of Worth) bag intervention, working with faith-based institutions and coordinating events to promote awareness.
