Ignorance is the father of fear. -- Charles J. Hull
The man who gave his name to Hull-House, Charles J. Hull, was something of a free thinker. Which in the 19th century meant that he dabbled in spiritualism. The Haunting of Hull-House is an interactive historical reenactment and performance that examines Hull's beliefs and the beliefs shared by many of the community members who settled in the neighborhoods surrounding the Hull mansion.
The performance invokes the folk tales and ghost stories told at the turn of the 20th century in the houses along Halsted Street. Tales about fraudulent mediums and spiritualists who profited from the grief of others will be explored. The legend of the Hull-House devil baby and other local lore will be included in this night of fable and performance.
Light refreshments served.
