On Saturday, April 20 it's time to get real and get mindful about developing long-term and direct relationships with your audience. Adam Thurman and the folks from 2am Theatre are holding a workshop specifically for small to medium-sized organizations who are running marketing and audience development campaigns and need to workshop and generate new ideas and strategies - fast.
These are the sorts of topics that typically come up during these sorts of workshops:
- The appropriate role of social media as it relates to marketing
- Tactics for creating marketing that works when you are low on time, money or personnel.
- Thoughts on what an arts marketing strategy truly is . . . and what it isn't.
- How to sell your marketing ideas to your colleagues, i.e. staff, Board of Director, boss.
- Organizational design and its impact on marketing
People who attend previous events have left with new strategies, new ideas and (most importantly) the resolve necessary to make their work stand out. You'll probably also leave with a new friend or two because you are going to be surrounded by people who are as hungry to challenge the status quo as you are. Bring your best ideas. We will make them better.
WHO THIS EVENT IS FOR: This event is designed for people who work within organizations, particularly small to midsized organizations. Examples include:
- The former artist who has been thrust into the "marketing director" role at an organization. This person is willing to do the work, but needs some guidance on how to get started.
- The experienced marketing director who has plenty of good ideas but is stuck because she can't convince the people around her to support her ideas.
- The leader of an organization who is tired of engaging marketing on a surface level and wants a deep understanding of the process.
THE FORMAT: The day will start with a presentation on the world we live in, how marketing has changed and the new pathways to success. Then we will go into a long Q&A session where you can talk about your challenges, what has you stuck and the specific sort of help you need.
This is the part of the day that puts the "work" into the "workshop". I'll challenge your ideas. You'll challenge my ideas. You'll provide insight to the other participants and they will provide insight to you. It's been my experience that this process is the best way to get the true problems revealed and resolved.
We will also have three special guests, Nick Keenan of Marshall Creative and (formerly) New Leaf Theatre. We will also have David J. Loehr, the head honcho of 2amTheatre, in the building. Plus, our good friend Eric Ziegenhagen will be around to help you come up with your next marketing idea.
In addition, there will be a good lunch and some time to meet with your fellow attendees.

This workshop is also sponsored by David J. Loehr and 2amTheatre (2amt). 2amt is a website that has become a movement that stands for innovation and possibility. It is a gathering place for ideas and creative work. It started as a theatre conversation and has evolved into one that embraces all the arts
TESTIMONIALS: If you're into that sort of thing here are a few:
Adam's marketing workshop was unlike any we have offered to our artists. This was not a typical passive workshop. As an arts administrator who works directly with individual artists , I found myself having several "ah-ha" moments during the course of the evening. I feel I'm much better to guide artists through their marketing plans now that I've observed Adam's presentation.
- Shannon Linker (Arts Council of Indianapolis)
I have hired Adam Thurman to teach several arts marketing workshops for the Southside Arts & Humanities Network because he is knowledge, accessible and engaging. His presentations are lively, entertaining and packed with concrete knowledge that can be put to use immediately.
-Joanie Friedman (Coordinator for the Southside Arts & Humanities Network, Civic Knowledge Project)
Working with Adam has given us seriously wide-eye-opening views towards what we do as service organization in the arts. His attention to detail, ability to listen and very quickly understand the what and the why of our mission, has allowed to us better define how we communicate that message. He executes this in a clear, simple, and very effective manner.
- Residency Unlimited
