The Center for California Studies Presents

When a Good Thing Goes Bad: The Fiscal Dangers of Misinformed Local Public Engagement

Recent civic bankruptcies in California underscore the importance of understanding factors that influence a local government’s fiscal health. The Center for California Studies is hosting this symposium to facilitate a conversation about the impact of public engagement on the fiscal sustainability of a community. We will explore the extent to which local fiscal choices are constrained or driven by citizens' expressed preferences, including their demand for services, receptivity to taxation and bond authorization, and choice of local leadership. This symposium will bring together academic experts on this topic, local leaders, citizen groups and other stakeholders to help identify practices and policies that promote fiscal sustainability through informed public engagement.
