Event Details

The Family Defense Center is proud to honor Anita Weinberg with our 2013 Family Defender Award for her devotion to bettering the welfare of children and the health of families. We are also excited to celebrate the lifetime achievements of Rhoda Redleaf and Dr. Eugene Pergament for their respective contributions which have benefited so many.

 2013 Family Defender

Anita WeinbergAnita Weinberg, J.D., M.S.W., one of the Family Defense Center’s founding board members, has been a clinical law professor in Loyola University Chicago School of Law since 1998.  Prof. Weinberg established and directs Loyola’s innovative Legislation and Policy Clinic and the Policy Institute within the Civitas ChildLaw Center. She is also the Director of the Lead Safe Housing Initiatives.  Prior to joining the faculty at Loyola, she was the policy director for the DCFS Office of the Inspector General; she worked for several years with the Children’s Rights Project of the Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago; and she represented children at the Office of the Cook County Public Guardian. She is a graduate of Columbia University School of Social Work and Loyola University Chicago School of Law. A gifted policy advocate and teacher, Prof. Weinberg has led countless major child welfare policy and education initiatives to protect family rights in the child welfare system.

Lifetime Achievement Awards

Dr. Eugene Pergament is a world-renowned geneticist and a pioneer in the field of genetic counseling, as well as a professor of clinical obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University. Dr Pergament has advocated for numerous social justice causes, including reproductive rights and the rights of persons with disabilities, and has been a major supporter of the Family Defense Center.

Rhoda Redleaf is a lifelong child advocate who has focused her nearly 60 year career on enhancing early childhood education and early child care opportunities, especially for disadvantaged children.
