The Fairy Queen
The Fairy Queen is an opera collaboration between The Herb Alpert School of Music and The CalArts School of Theater at CalArts.
Henry Purcell's The Fairy Queen first performed in 1692 for the 15th wedding anniversary of King William III and Queen Mary II of England. A masque, also known as a semi-opera, or, as Purcell described it, a “Restoration spectacular”, The Fairy Queen evokes the enchanted world of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
The libretto is an anonymous adaptation of Shakespeare’s text. The changes to the original text reflect the dramatic conventions of the 17th century.
This new production has been created specifically with a 21st century audience in mind.
