Valerie Grillo is the Chief Diversity Officer of American Express Company. She is responsible for developing the company's global diversity and inclusion strategy for more than 60,000 employees in 130 markets. Diversity and inclusion is about creating and maintaining an environment that enables American Express to be more inclusive - both internally and externally.
As a leader in the company's efforts to attract, hire, develop, and retain diverse talent and to create an engaging global workplace in which all people can succeed, Valerie and her team work closely with senior executives and employees across the company on a wide variety of initiatives. They also provide strategic direction to the company's travel and payment businesses to understand and engage the broadest base of customers worldwide. Valerie also dedicates her time to providing 1-on-1 coaching with our senior leadership.
In her nine-year tenure, Valerie has held numerous global Human Resources leadership positions at American Express, focused on talent management, leadership and organizational development, campus recruitment and employee engagement. Previously, Valerie led Global Leadership Development at American Express. She and her team were focused on building great leaders at all levels of the organization, from front-line employees to the senior most executives. She was the architect behind American Express' Global Leadership curriculum, which is a series of development experiences for the company's 12,000 people leaders helping them to build the leadership and business skills necessary for success.
Prior to American Express, Valerie worked at JP Morgan Chase (JPMC) as Vice President of Strategic Talent Solutions. In her tenure at JPMC, Valerie coached both senior executives and the management teams of acquisition companies to build overall leadership effectiveness and ensure successful merger integrations. For three years, she was an entrepreneur developing employee data and talent management solutions for small businesses at HR One.
Valerie is a member of the Conference Board's Leadership Development Council. She holds an M.A. in Organizational Psychology from Columbia University and an A.B. with Honors from Brown University. She resides in Rockland County, NY with her husband and two young daughters.
