The Dunes Invites you to an Earth Day Celebration with Live Music by U.S. Royalty w/Matthew Hemerlein,
Vegan Cuisine by Lauren Von Der Pool
and Design Exhibits by Architecture for Humanity
Please join us for “Off Ramp,” an event commemorating Earth Day, being held from 3PM-9PM on Sunday, April 25, 2010. The all-ages event will feature cuisine by celebrity vegan chef Lauren Von der Pool, live music from local DJs and the band U.S. Royalty w/ Matthew Hemerlein, an exhibit by Architecture for Humanity and live silk screening by Truth Among Liars. The event will be held at Long View Gallery. The $20 cover charge will benefit Architecture for Humanity.
Amazing Food Celebrity chef, activist and educator Lauren Von Der Pool, will host an on-site vegan café at “Offramp.” Ms. Von Der Pool is a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu and recently opened her DC restaurant, Café Green. She will share cooking demonstrations throughout the day and discuss her non-profit’s efforts to prevent childhood obesity through healthy living. Her presentations will help attendees understand how simple food choices can have a significant impact on their personal health and how what we eat is inextricably linked with the health of our planet.
Live DJ Sets by DJs Sam Burns, Stylus, Jamil "Jahsonic" Hamilton, Two Sisters, Harry Dixon, Jerome Baker III, Brown Rice Collective, and Tom Pipkin on percussion.
Specialty Drinks Bartenders from Marvin Bistro and Lounge will complement Ms. Von Der Pool’s creations with specialty cocktails plus champagne and wine.
Environmental impacts from this event will be reduced through recycling, composting and sustainable procurement. The organizers encourage attendees to use public transportation. Longview Gallery is only two short blocks from Mt. Vernon Sq. metro stop (Yellow Line). Environmental consulting services for the event were provided by Maria Fyodorova.
Architecture for Humanity (AfH) is a non-profit organization that seeks to build a more sustainable future using the power of design through a global network of architecture professionals. The AfH exhibit will include video, photography and story boards highlighting recent architecture projects. Each project’s design strategy seeks to meet the practical needs of target communities, while ensuring its long-term viability and reducing its environmental impact. The projects featured will include a women’s institute in Rwanda, home rebuilding in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and a local project in DC’s Cardozo High School. Support for the AfH exhibit was provided by Catholic University School of Architecture and Planning, DodgeChrome and MBC Color Graphics.
Truth Among Liars, a DC-based artists’ collective, will be customizing attendees’ clothing with silk screen designs and will be selling silk-screened organic cotton t-shirts. Attendees are encouraged to bring items to silkscreen.
