Shame is intimately tied to our identity, to the very core of our being. One moment we are decent acceptable, self-possessed individuals and the next we are thrown into confusion, our identity a muddle.  Shame speaks to the dramas of covering and uncovering, words and silence, the literal and the inexpressible, concealment and disclosure, community and isolation, mutuality and alienation, the objective and the personal. The world of human opposites is constellated in shame. It can be said that analysis is the ritualized experience of shame and repair. When shame goes unacknowledged in treatment it can become recursive and self-perpetuating leading to ruptures, impasses and bitter early termination. Yet, worked with effectively, shame can strengthen the bond, facilitate insight, and humbly allow both analyst and analysand access to deeper sources of being. A shame informed therapy might become the refiner’s fire where gold is realized.

Jane Reynolds, PhD, is a psychologist and an analyst member of the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco as well as a member of the teaching and supervising faculty at The Psychotherapy Institute in Berkeley. She has had a long-standing interest in the profound and nearly invisible role shame plays in shaping much of our clinical work and theorizing.  She has written, lectured and organized conferences on working with shame for more than two decades.  She has taught on this and other subjects at the C. G. Jung Institute in San Francisco, The Psychotherapy Institute in Berkeley, as well as other venues locally and abroad. Dr. Reynolds has been in private practice in Berkeley since 1979.
