Founded in 1952, the Humane Society of South Mississippi (HSSM) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in Gulfport, Mississippi and cares for approximately 10,000 homeless animals each year. HSSM provides adoptions, return-to-owner services, and high quality, low cost spay/neuter services to the public as well as serving as Harrison County’s sole animal sheltering facility. HSSM depends on the support of community members to provide its high level of services. HSSM is currently working towards its Countdown to Zero goal to eliminate the euthanasia of healthy and treatable pets in our community by 2015 through high-impact, targeted programs such as adoptions (aimed at high-risk populations), spay/neuter (particularly of feral and free roaming “Community Cats”), an aggressive pet identification campaign (entitled “Tag ‘Em! South Mississippi”), and its efforts to expand isolation space for animals with highly contagious, but easily treatable illness (with a hospital-style building called the Second Chance Ward).
