Join us for a day focused on realizing the truth of our interconnectedness and the way it supports our innate ability to care for ourselves and others with compassion and wisdom.

Morning Session
Dr. Grace Dammann and Fu Schroeder
Two extraordinary women - both fiercely dedicated to living meaningful lives on the path of Zen in the roles of caregiver and care receiver - will provide an intimate look into the many layers of physical, psychological and spiritual healing that they have practiced while caring for one another over the past four years.

Afternoon Session
Jennifer Block and Linda Ruth Cutts
Through meditation, Zen teachings, and guided exercises we will consider how to balance the gift of giving and/or receiving with the suffering that can come with these. We will also reflect upon how the profound spiritual gifts of giving and receiving can enliven us and bring us into deeper connection with our Buddha nature.

This training serves as an introduction to the principles and methods of SF Zen Center's year-long Contemplative Caregiver course that begins in October 2012.

Grace Dammann
Dr. Grace Dammann, a revered physician who was honored by the Dalai Lama for her extraordinary work with AIDS patients during the height of the epidemic, has been a resident of Green Gulch Farm for many decades. Her life was shattered in May 2008 by a catastrophic head-on collision on the Golden Gate Bridge. After 48 days in a coma and multiple surgeries for broken bones and injured organs, doctors were amazed when Grace miraculously awoke with her cognitive abilities intact. Yet once the thrill and euphoria of survival had passed, the hard, painful work of rehabilitation and caregiving began for Grace, her partner Fu Schroeder, and an extraordinary community of friends and colleagues.
