The Cinco de Rhino Walk and Ride
The Greater Philadelphia and Elmwood Park Zoo Chapters of the American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK)
Sunday, May 5, 2013 from 3:30 PM to 8:00 PM (EDT)
On May 5th, join zoo keepers, zoo staff, docents and volunteers from the Greater Philadelphia and Elmwood Park Zoo Chapters of the American Association of Zoo Keepers in showing your rhino spirit! Of the 5 species of rhinos that exist today, all five are endangered- and you can help them! You will embrace all that is "rhino" by wearing your very own bright red "horn" atop your head and/or bike helmet, courtesy of our partners at the Rhinose Foundation, then join the rest of the "herd" in walking and/or riding for rhino survival. Think, who among your friends and family would sponsor you with a donation for wearing a big, plastic horn on top of your head for an extended period of time? Take donations, then take pictures to show (and amuse) your supporters. 100% of the proceeds go to rhino conservation. Donations can be collected via check or cash, then submitted at the event, or can be made on this site. (Just have your donors specify your name in the note/comment field.)
The Cinco de Rhino Walk and Ride is a celebration of conservation partners and the stewardship mission of our local zoos. The entire walking event will be held at the Elmwood Park Zoo on their 5k course. Arrive at 3:30pm to pick up your rhinose and start walking at 4pm. Finish up your walking by 6pm so we can take a group picture with those biking the event. Bikers will include keepers and other zoo staff members who had to work during the day. Bikers will depart the Elmwood Park Zoo shortly after 6pm and travel 15 miles to the Philadelphia Zoo via the Schuylkill River Trail. There will be no official rest stops, so bikers are required to be at the intermediate level. The "Horned Bikers" will finish up at the gates of the Philadelphia Zoo around 8pm. There will be no shuttle for bikes, so please make your travel arrangements appropriately. The Norristown transportation center is within biking distance of the Elmwood Park Zoo.
This is the first year of this event, but we hope it will be the first of many. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Wendy Lenhart at the Philadelphia Zoo at email@example.com. Any further information about the Cinco de Rhino/Bowling for Rhinos fundraiser can be found at www.aazk.org.
