CCS Summer Workshops 2012

CHILDREN’S BOOKS | June 25-29, 2012

This new, goal-oriented workshop will explore several aspects of writing and illustrating books for children through hands on exercises and activities. Faculty will include celebrated children’s book authors, illustrators, and cartoonists.

CREATE COMICS | July 16-20, 2012

This 5-day workshop packs in the essentials for producing your own comics. Through lectures, exercises, and group projects, students learn about story structure, page composition, pacing, materials and techniques, character design, environmental drawing, and production. Students collaborate on a comic anthology that they self-publish during the workshop. Create Comics is for both beginner and advanced students age 16 and over.

CARTOONING STUDIO | July 23-27, 2012

Cartooning Studio is a 5-day cartooning intensive, ideal for adults and college students (with a for-credit option). Through lectures and classroom exercises, CCS faculty will cover the basics of visual storytelling. This is a goal-orientated workshop in which students are given the support necessary to create and self-publish their own independent project.

EXTENDED STUDIO OPTION | July 30-August 1, 2012

This additional 3-day workshop after Cartooning Studio is designed for students who wish to extend their time at CCS working on independent projects, with full access to CCS resources such as studio space, the production lab, and the Schulz Library.

Need a boost of comics inspiration? CCS’s new Master Class in Comics Narrative will turbo-charge your creative engines with an intensive week of comics boot camp.

During the week-long on-campus workshop, students will participate in lectures, collaborative exercises, book discussion sessions, events, and group critiques, with the goal of producing the first draft of a longer comics project.

During the next 8 weeks (August 27 - October 19, 2012), students will develop and refine their work through online collaboration with faculty and peers, and complete comprehensive final drafts of their projects.

The Master Class in Comics Narrative is taught by Eisner-winning cartoonist and experienced comics educator Paul Karasik, in conjunction with CCS instructors. In the words of Art Spiegelman, “Paul has a kind of intelligence combined with earnestness that comes from someplace deep,  not a recipe book. He is very, very, very intelligent.”

You will leave this class a stronger cartoonist than when you entered.

Cartooning Studio can be taken for 2 undergraduate credits. Master Class in Comics Narrative can be taken for 3 undergraduate credits. Policies on transfer credit vary by institution and by program, so please check with your college or university Register and/or Program Chair before registering for-credit. To enroll for-credit, students must have an official transcript sent to:
