Explore the life and legacy of Jimmy Tsutomo Mirikitani, a native Sacramento artist incarcerated at Tule Lake during WWII, in this special workshop featuring a presentation of the 2014 book based on his art “The Cat Who Chose to Dream” by author Dr. Loriene Honda followed by a screening of the 2006 documentary film “The Cats of Mirikitani” on Saturday, April 5. Activities include:

  • Presentation on “The Cat Who Chose to Dream” by author Dr. Loriene Honda from 11:00 am to 12:15 pm
  • Screening of “The Cats of Mirikitani,” a 2006 documentary film starring native Sacramento artist Jimmy Tsutomo Mirikitani from 12:30 to 2:00 pm
  • Book signing with Dr. Loriene Honda from 2:00 to 3:00 pm
  • Hands-on origami activities for kids ages 5 & up from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
  • Self-guided tours of the Museum’s current exhibits including “Uprooted! Japanese Americans During WWII” and “The Art of Gaman: Arts & Crafts from the Japanese American Internment, 1942-1946” featuring a painting of Tule Lake by Jimmy Tsutomo Mirikitani from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm
  • 20% off select Japanese American themed items in the Museum Store from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm (excluding consignment items & books)
  • Proceeds benefit updates to “Uprooted! Japanese Americans During WWII

Free admission for the first 30 registrants - OR - $10.00 advance admission & $15.00 day-of door admission. Tickets on sale through 5:00 pm on Friday, April 4, 2014.

Do I need to bring a printed copy of my ticket?
Yes, please bring a printed copy of your ticket to expedite entry at the Admissions window. Ticket holders without a printed ticket may experience entry delays for looking up payment.

Will there be door sales the day of the event?
If tickets do not sell out in advance, door admission will be available for the remaining number of 250 seats in the Museum's auditorium for $15.00 per person at the Admissions window. Cash and most major credit cards will be accepted.

Does the Museum have parking?
Yes, parking for weekend Museum visitors is available in the surface street lot on the corner of 10th and O Streets directly across the street from the Museum beginning at 10:00 am.

What is the refund policy?
No refunds will be given because the event proceeds are a tax-deductible charitable contribution benefiting the Museum's National Park Service matching grant to update the exhibit "Uprooted! Japanese Americans During WWII."

The name on the registration/ticket doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?
Yes, registration and ticket are transferrable.
