The Business and Craft of Writing with KEVIN MAHER
Saturday, April 28, 2012 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM (EDT)
TRUE TALES FROM THE WRITERS' ROOM: The Business and Craft of Writing
Kevin Maher is an Emmy-nominated comedy writer who’s worked for HBO, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, AMC, CNN, MoMA and Troma. His resume credits include live TV comedy, an animated Christmas special, a Universal Studios theme park ride, basic-cable clip shows, a doomed Wizard of Oz remake, an online novella, a Christian teen talk show – and that’s just the stuff that made it to the resume. He’s also created 5 web series, optioned a cartoon show, edited a book about super-heroes, wrestled a turkey with Adam Sandler, and wrote 100 haiku about Batman (on a dare).
In his writing workshop Kevin uses interactive techniques to let the room determine the topics of discussion. Along the way Kevin covers subjects like:
• How writing for TV is like working at Pizza Hut
• Figuring out your dream job
• The biggest problem in the entertainment industry
• What to ask in a job interview
• My First TV Pitch
• How to scientifically determine when to turn down a job
• The dangers of bad advice
• VH1 vs. George Orwell
• What’s expected of TV writers
This inspiring, entertaining workshop has been presented at MTV Networks, The School of Visual Arts, and Reel Works Brooklyn, to name a few. With each talk, Kevin has been invited back to give it again. Kevin’s writer-produer reel: http://vimeo.com/20500591
