We are excited to celebrate the beginning of summer with another installment of The Bunker AV Sessions. Dapper dance chameleon Uwe Schmidt has just dropped his follow-up to last year’s Winterreise. HD marks Schmidt’s return to regular home Raster-Noton, and sees him recruit the likes of Jamie Lidell, Alva Noto and Jorge Gonzalez as side players. He will be joined along with DJ's Derek Plaslaiko coming from Berlin, Carlos Souffront hailing from NYC & local honey bee Jacob Sperber. We will be offering up some mesmerizing visuals from Mary Franck + Ryan Alexander. Atom ™ is part of our GAFFTA family so please help us give him a very warm welcome back!
Uwe Schmidt (aka Atom Heart, Atom™, Señor Coconut), is a German composer, musician and producer of electronic music. He is often regarded as the father of electrolatino, electrogospel and aciton (acid-reggaeton) music. Uwe Schmidt is one of the most successful and prolific German electronic music producers from the early 90′s. Born in Frankfurt, Uwe Schmidt’s early works “Binary” and “Cloned” were released in 1992 under the moniker of Lassigue Bendthaus. These were followed in 1993 by “Datacide II” and “Coeur Atomique”, both released under his most pupular moniker, Atom Heart, and “Experimental Post Techno Swing” under the name of Lisa Carbon. In 1994, Uwe Schmidt started his own Rather Interesting label to release his own electronic productions under an uncountable array of different monikers (more than 20), including the ones of Datacide, Almost Digital, CMYK, Dr Mueller, Erik Satin, Interactive Music and Ongaku. Throughout all these identities Schmid has approached different styles from dancefloor stuff to trance and ambient. He has developed a successful career as an industrial dance producer, specially referring the works signed as Lassigue Bendthaus. In 1997, Schmidt moved to Santiago de Chile, South-America, and got influenced by the latin rhythms, producing a set of funny works under the name of Sr. Coconut where he fussioned a latin orchestra with Kraftwerk‘s classics reaching international success. These project includes the albums “El Gran Baile Con Señor Coconut” (1997) and “El Baile Alemán” (2000) as Señor Coconut y Su Conjunto. Uwe Schmidt is also well known for his prolific collaborations with other artists, including Pete Namlook, Tetsu Inoue and Bill Laswell.
Some people filter through the record bins, taking what are on the wall or record store employee suggestions. Then there are people who dig deeper into the dusty crates, and absorb music like a sponge; ignoring labels, bucking trends and are forever on a quest to find the perfect record. The ones that make the staunchest of chin stroking, note taking trainspotters lose their shit on the dancefloor, hanging on every record from one to the next. Derek Plaslaiko unquestionably falls into the latter category. As a teen equally transfixed by Mojo and Wizard cassettes and Minor Threat 7”s, Plaslaiko followed the beats from his hometown 20 miles south of Detroit to the epicenter of Detroit techno, then enjoying its third wave of success. He quietly paid his dues on Detroit’s rave circuit, and was a crucial piece of the puzzle for the legendary Poorboy and Analog parties of the mid-nineties. He quickly earned a reputation for forward thinking DJ sets that were clinical, sophisticated and extremely sensual. This combination resulted in a residency for Family, the weekly party at Detroit’s legendary Motor. With a reputation for high energy sets that were versatile and tasteful, Plaslaiko slowly became in demand on the Midwestern club circuit; sharing the stage with such techno luminares as John Acquaviva, Kevin Saunderson, Richardo Villalobos, Baby Ford, and Matthew Herbert. It was also during that time Plaslaiko was asked by Carl Craig to perform at the inaugural edition of the Detroit Electronic Music Festival. In 2003, Plaslaiko became part of the original team of DJs at Detroit’s Untitled parties, sharing a residency with Tadd Mullinix (aka James T. Cotton), Matthew Dear and Mike Servito. In 2004 he made the decision to head east and set up camp in New York City, determined to bring a slice of the Motor City to the Big Apple. Currently, Derek is one of the resident DJs at the Bunker (Subtonic) in NYC, as well as an integral part of the Wolf + Lamb monthly parties. Most recently, he was honored in the Village Voice 2006 “Best Of” poll as New York’s Best Techno DJ.
Carlos Souffront is a music gourmet, a true DJ's DJ. His taste is rich and vast and he has the unique ability to create deeply rhythmic narratives that offer unexpected and exotic spices. He mastered his deep mixing skills with a cassette deck and a belt drive turntable in his father's den in Troy, home of contemporaries such as Mike Servito, Tadd Mullinex and Matt Dear. Equally entrenched in indie rock, post punk, experimental music, ambient, rock, house, and techno, Carlos was always a man of many worlds - with an ability to traverse though them with an unique imagination. There is a mood to his search within sound, something that is heavy, deep yet gritty. Like many Caribbean transplants that ends up in northern colder climates, he wonders where our rhythmic complexity is. For him it is effortless and endlessly surprising to the listener. Carlos is an important component of the Interdimensional Transmissions parties, bringing a loose yet tight moody deepness and an ever unexpected edge. At the original No Way Back party, he demanded truth in advertising, pushing us to and then past the 12 hour mark. He has participated in the studio with Ectomorph, and also performed alongside some of their live performances. It is all too rare to find someone within the electronic music spectrum that can be called an original, that you can only really explain to someone who experienced them on the dance floor, usually just by saying "that's so" and saying their name. Carlos is one of those rarities.
P-Play is most notable the co-founder of San Francisco's DJ Crew Honey Soundsystem. Roughing it as a disc-jockey in the U.S. and Internationally since he was 18 years old, the now 26 year old has built a reputation for pushing underground house/techno sounds back into the gay dance music scene.
Galen can been defined as a San Francisco DJ staple however traveling has landed him guest slots at events throughout the United States and internationally. Over the years, he has played alongside countless renowned artists and in countries such as the UK, France, Italy, China, Canada, Portugal, Spain, and Mexico. His dj sets reflect a deep, funky, underground warehouse sound stemming from a synchronous relationship with a multitude of compositions. His mixing ability enables him to smoothly and effortlessly flow between styles within a single set, adept at adjusting his sound to meet nearly any situation.
Mary Franck is a new media artist whose works articulate the beautiful and unsettling potential of digital technology. Her recent work has been primarily in video, crafting luminous, dream-like environments to chart digital extensions of human imagination. She enjoys synthesizing different media and collaborates often with dancers, programmers, musicians, mutants and other kinds of artists. Franck holds a Studio Art B.A. in Conceptual and Information Art from SFSU. Presently she is a resident artist at Million Fishes Arts Collective and an Interactive Art Engineer at Obscura Digital.
Ryan Alexander experiments with generative techniques in animation and design. He spends his time hacking software for live visuals, and exploring what’s possible with all the crazy tools humanity has at it’s disposal.
Gabriel Dunne’s work spans fine art to design and technology in the mediums of installation, architecture, industrial design, and audio/visual programming. His pursuits insight the exploration of life, music and sound, structure, and systems in the natural world. His projects have been shown in internationally at conferences and exhibitions including New York MoMA, SIGGRAPH, Japan Media Arts Festival, Barcelona Festival Sonar, Interferenze Italia, and numerous publications. He is a San Francisco native, and holds a B.A. in Design | Media Arts from UCLA. Gabriel currently an instructor for the Open Source class in BAVC's NextGen department.
