Event Details

Nokia and Telerik welcome you participate in The Boston Hackathon. Learn how to write amazing Windows Phone apps as Lance McCarthy (Nokia Ambassador/Telerik XAML Specialist) guides you through the new and exciting Windows Phone 8 APIs. Apply these new ninja skills when you participate in the hackathon to win one of these prizes:

  • 1st Place: Surface RT and a Nokia Lumia 920
  • 2nd Place: $250 cash and a Nokia Lumia 822
  • 3rd Place:  $100 cash and a Nokia Lumia 620

Every developer/team (publisher) who publishes an app to the store will get:

  • $100 per app (up to $2000)
  • A Nokia Lumia 800

Every developer involved who submits an app for the hackathon will get:

  • Nokia Premium Developer Token ($1,500.00 value)
  • Membership to the Nokia Dvlup.com rewards program

What is a Nokia Premium Developer Token? The token pays for your

  • Windows Phone DevCenter account ($99.00 Lets you publish apps to the Store and unlock phones)
  • Telerik RadControls for Windows Phone license ($99.00)
  • 1 Million Buddy API calls a month for 12 months ($1,200.00)
  • Two Nokia support tickets ($198.00)


There will be food, plently of cool swag and resources to help you develop your app (programmable NFC cards, sample code w/ tutorials and help from experts). I'll have loaner devices at the event for you to do your final testing on. I will also have the Windows Phone SDK on thumb drives for you to install, it would be better for you to do this ahead of time. See this post for step by step instructions.

At the end of the hackathon, you will be strutting your stuff on the big screen (on device or PC). There will be some important people watching, so bring your A game and make a killer app.


  • 9 AM – Check-In, registration and breakfast
  • 10 AM –Introducing Windows Phone Development (50 minutes)
  • 11 AM –Building Windows Phone Applications (50 minutes)
  • 12 PM- Lunch and Networking (begin partnerships for hackathon, start thinking about your idea)
  • 12:30 – Using the Telerik RadControls in your App (30 minutes)
  • 1:10 PM –Network Communication (30 minutes)
  • 1:50 PM- Tiles and Lock Screen notification (30 minutes)
  • 2:30 PM- Maps and Location (30 minutes)
  • 3:10 PM- Proximity Sensors and Bluetooth (30 minutes)
  • 3:50 PM- Using Speech in your apps (30 minutes)
  • 4:30 PM- Publishing to the Windows Phone Store (30 minutes)
  • 5 PM – End of Training [Dinner]
  • 5 PM - 9 PM- Open time Build your team, start working on your app, get support
  • 9 PM - Doors close


Day 2

  • 9 AM – Doors open [Breakfast]
  • 12 PM –Lunch
  • 3:30 PM – Hackathon Deadline: Presentation of Apps begin
  • 5:00 – Judging / Awards

Download the WP8 SDK here or if you are running Windows 7 get the WP7 SDK here. Go here if you Bootcamp your Mac or use Parallels.

Small Print: You need to be running Windows 7 to use the WP7 SDK and Windows 8 for WP8 developement. To use the WP8 SDK emulator you need to be running Windows 8 Pro. I am personally running this event and reserve the right to: Change any rules that are deemed unfair, Change a time slot or class topic, and change prizes if one become unavailable. Judging is final and you are responsible for any taxes or fees on the prize you win. Nokia, Telerik, Microsoft and I are not liable for any injury or damages you sustain or involved in while participating. If you are already covered by another Nokia Ambassador, you need to make me aware of this before accepting any prizes. every developer who is on a team that submits an app will get a Nokia Premium Developer Token. Only one "Lumia 800 and $100 per app" prize can be awarded per DevCenter Publisher (team or individual). Nokia's Dvlup program is only open to developers from the US, Canada or the UK.
