BATTLE of the CANVAS® 2011

Theme:The Philly Experience: What's Your Imprint?

The Battle of the Canvas ® is a live painting competition that encourages the involvement of emerging and professional visual artists to paint under a theme that will promote social change through artistic images.  In addition to fusing diverse artists with different skill levels together, we encourage the appreciation of visual arts outside of traditional galleries and museums.  This free event allows the public to connect with and interact with artists as they paint.  We provide a different dimension to the painter-patron relationship by allowing potential patrons to see the full artistic process by watching a blank canvas transform into a work of art.  We highlight multiple forms of creative expression by inviting various diverse bands, musicians, DJs and dancers from the Philadelphia community to perform.   The Battle of the Canvas® is an all inclusive arts event that showcases the power of visual and performing arts while implementing social change.

August 27th from 12pm-10pm @ The Piazza at Schmidts (2nd and Germantown Avenue)

How many people are expected to attend this event?

The Battle of the Canvas® is an event that will attract over 4,000 people. I have estimated that number based on the marketing behind the event with partnering organizations and companies involved plus the attraction to the Piazza itself and the many shops, boutiques, galleries and restaurants on the campus along with the apartments and the neighborhood surrounding it.

How do I register my company or organization?

To register as a vendor, visit and select which level of vending you are interested in.

Are there different levels for vending?

There are two levels of vending. The Early Bird inside space (directly inside the Piazza’s courtyard where the event will occur) starting at $80 until June, increasing to $100 after that.

How large is my vendor space and what is allowed?

You will be given a 10 foot space allowable to accommodate a table no larger than 8 feet and at the most 4 chairs. If you need to rent tables and or chairs, you can do so for an additional $15 on top of the vending fee on the page. Simply click that option and it will be added to your basket.   One 10 x 10 tent is allowed if you would like to block the sun.  No larger tent sizes are acceptable.

Do I have to stay the entire 10 hours?

Not staying the entire event is up to you. However, you MUST arrive at The Artists Piazza at 10am to check-in and set-up. The event starts at 12pm and all vendors must be in place by 12pm. You do not have to let staff know that you are leaving UNLESS you rented tables and/or chairs.

What types of vendors are allowed during the event?

All types of vendors EXCEPT food vendors. There are no exceptions; if it can be consumed then it is not permitted. This is a festival of the arts, so we are open to all creative vending, corporate companies, non-profit organizations, artists selling their artwork, designers, etc. This is an event to expose YOU and what you have to offer the Philadelphia community in services and/or goods.

What is the deadline for registering as a vendor?

June is the deadline for ALL EARLY BIRD COURTYARD VENDING at the rate of $80. After that, the price will increase to $100.

What time should I arrive at The Artist Piazza?

All vendors must arrive at The Artist Piazza at 10am to check-in and set-up.

Where is the Piazza located?

The easiest way to explain the location is 2nd and Germantown Avenue. You will see the Piazza structure ahead of you as you drive down 2nd street. Stay to the left of the Piazza (Germantown Avenue) to access the load-in area which is on North Hancock Street.

How do I load in my vending materials?

Arrive on the Germantown Avenue side of the Piazza and you will see the load in area at the intersection of Germantown Avenue and North Hancock Street. PLEASE CHECK-IN FIRST so that you know where your placement is located before you begin to unload. You MAY NOT leave your car parked on Germantown Avenue. There is a parking lot area on that same side where all visitors can park for FREE.

Where can I park?

In the Free parking lot located on Germantown Avenue…it’s a dirt lot and there are MANY spaces for you!

Where is the check-in location for vendors?

This location will be in the form of a table with Battle of the Canvas® staff and a sign that says VENDING. You MUST have with you your ticket that shows you have paid for the space and an ID with the same name as the person who purchased the vending space. After you are checked-in, you may begin unloading your materials. Spaces are guaranteed, however, exact table location placement is at a first come first selection basis. If you purchased an INSIDE vending option, you WILL be inside the Piazza. If you purchased an OUTSIDE vending option, you will be located along the perimeter of either Germantown Avenue or North Hancock Streets.
