Art and Science of Trail Design

This comprehensive two-day (indoor) workshop will unveil the key elements of trail planning and design essential for long term sustainability.   While good trail design involves a range of sciences to provide for a sustainable route, great trail design involves the art of interpreting the landscape to maximize its exceptional features thereby enhancing the user experience.  The ultimate goal of the workshop is to show how to design trails in natural settings that are ecologically sustainable, fun for a variety of user groups to travel, and respectful of the surrounding landscape.

Highlights include:

·         Trail planning (understanding trail user motivations, determining the desired trail experiences etc.)

·         Designing for sustainability

·         Enhancing the user experience

·         Trail construction (hand build vs. machine build)

·         Trail structures (steps, bridges, switchbacks, etc)

·         Trail Maintenance

·         Trail Management (trail use designations, trail configurations, system management etc.)

·         Trailhead facilities (parking, picnic tables, restrooms, kiosks)

·         Trailside amenities (rest benches, bike racks, view-sheds)

·         Signage and interpretive information

·         And much more...

The training will be held on both Saturday and Sunday from 8am - 4pm in Boulder, CO. Further details and information will be sent out to all registrants a few weeks before the workshop. Please contact 303-678-6344 with any questions.

The training will be presented by Woody Keen.  Mr. Keen is the president of Trail Dynamics LLC and he is the past President of the Professional Trailbuilders Association (4 terms). He earned a degree in Outdoor Recreation Management and has worked in the outdoor industry in a number of capacities for over 30 years. His involvement in trail work dates back to the late eighties and he combines many lifetime experiences to maximize the learning process including background as an outdoor educator, extensive experience designing and building new trails, creating solutions for problems on existing trails, and extensive travel studying many great trail systems.  Woody is one of the most respected trail educators in the industry and his conference speaking and education workshop calendar stays booked throughout the year.
