8:30–10:30 a.m. - “Carly’s Voice” presented by Arthur Fleischman

At the age of two, Carly Fleischmann was diagnosed with severe autism and an oral motor condition that prevented her from speaking. Doctors predicted that she would never intellectually   develop beyond the abilities of a small child. Although she made some progress after years of intensive behavioral and communication therapy, Carly remained largely unreachable. Then, at age ten, she had a breakthrough.

While working with her devoted therapists, Barb and Howie, Carly reached over to her communication device and  typed “HELP TEETH HURT,” much to everyone’s astonishment. This was the beginning of Carly’s journey toward self-realization. Although Carly still struggles with all the symptoms of autism, which she describes with uncanny accuracy and detail, she now has regular, witty, and profound conversations on the computer with her family, her therapists, and many thousands of people who follow her via her blog, Facebook, and Twitter. A 2009 segment on 20/20 brought her story to national attention, and she has since appeared on television with Larry King, Dr. Travis Strork of the CBS show, The Doctors, and Holly Robinson Peete, and has befriended Ellen DeGeneres.

10:45-11:45 a.m. -  “Tips and Tricks for Supporting People with Autism

 Spectrum Disorders: Everywhere!”

presented by Barbara T. Doyle, MS

Effective supports may be easier to deliver than you think! Laugh while learning simple, ready-to-use support strategies to add to your “bag of tricks.” These tips are helpful for parents, friends and families, educators, school support staff and therapists, and anyone working in the adult services delivery system. Become more effective as a support person in any environment working with any child or adult on the autism spectrum.

12:00 - 1:00 p.m. -  Luncheon (included in registration) & Networking

 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. - “Capturing the Benefits of Visual Strategies”

Meeting Communication, Behavior & Social Needs in Autism Spectrum Disorders

presented by Linda Hodgdon, M. Ed., CCC-SLP

Most students with Autism, Asperger’s and related communication challenges are visual learners!  Capitalizing on their strengths, using visual strategies alters many social, communication, and learning challenges.  This program will demonstrate effective ways to use a range of low tech to high tech visual tools to improve communication, reduce behavior problems and help students and adults participate successfully in their life opportunities. Visual strategies work for a wide range of ages and skill levels. This program will define the need,  discuss training, and demonstrate many practical ideas for school, home and community.
