Day One

09:00 to 13:00

Stuctured over two days, the morning of day one will set the scene for the event with presentations from Richard Parsons, head of the AD team at Defra and Charlotte Morton, Chief Executive of ADBA.


This will be followed by presentations from the leading UK academic institutions giving an overview of the current level and breadth of research in the AD area including:

  • How to increase methane yeld from sewage slude and improving phosphorus management

Cynthia Carliell-Marquet, University of Birmingham,

  • How we can learn from animal gut fermentation to improve AD technology

Mike Theodorou, The Centre for Process Innovation, Durham University

  • Discusing how advances on microbiological and matagenomic technologies could impact on AD process of the future.

Richard Thwaites, FERA

14:00 - 17:30

The afternoon of day one will focus on research being undertaken by industry highlighting examples of successful academic/industry R&D collaborations from CAMBI, Agroplas and UKWIR.

Following on from this Nina Sweet from WRAP will provide an overview of the findings of the 'R&D Gap Analysis' and how these missing links can help to drive innovation in AD.


19:30 onwards

The Academic and Industry Networking dinner will follow the close of day one, with the presentations from the day providing plenty of food for thought for discussion throughout the evening.


This will be held at The Bristol Hotel, Prince Street Bristol, BS1 4QF.

Day Two

09:00 - 13:40

Day two will continue with an industry focus and presentations on the commercialisation of research from ISIS, successful collaborations between industry and academia, and an overview of the available funding from the research councils.


After coffee ADBA will present the findings of its Members' Survey on R&D. These results will focus discussions prior to the faciliated breakout sessions, which aim to draw out the key R&D challenges for the AD industry at present. The sessions will cover the following topics:

  • Digester design & operation
  • Biogas clean-up and upgrading
  • Waste feedstock
  • Wastewater treatment
  • Lifecycle carbon analysis, energy and carbon footprinting
  • Policy, regulation, drivers & economics
  • Monitoring & control
  • Process and numerical modelling
  • Farm digestion

Over lunch the facilitators will present feedback and conclusions from the breakout sessions, and finally Prof Martin Bigg (Director of the Environmental iNet) will conclude with a summary of the two days and most importantly the next steps for AD research and development.
