When & Where
Charles Hiigel, Zachary Rosen
As beer manager for California's original activist beer speciality pub, Spike's, in San Luis Obispo, Charles Hiigel was in a unique position to observe and encourage the microbrewery revival in California. As part of a small contingent of Californians to make the trip to Colorado for the 2nd GABF in 1983, Hiigel returned and introduced the beer festival concept to California. From 1983 to 1993, his festivals sought to bring together all of the breweries in California, so Hiigel was in regular correspondence with every brewery, often before they were even open. His Intro to Beer Appreciation class, The Brewer's Art, was first offered in 1983, and has expanded to seven sessions, of which this seminar is Part 4.
Zachary Rosen is a beer educator and "The Beer Guy" for the SB Sentinel. At 22, Zach became the youngest person to obtain the Certified Cicerone® (beer Sommelier) title. His specialty is coordinating and hosting beer events, in addition to serving as a consultant, teacher and writer.
