Sponsored by The Community College of Baltimore County, the conference will take place on Thursday, June 13, and Friday, June 14. On Wednesday, June 12, a series of half and full day workshops will be offered.
What is acceleration? All across the country, colleges are delivering developmental education in exciting new ways. Peter Adams, at the Community College of Baltimore County, pioneered the Accelerated Learning Program, which allows students to take a credit class concurrently with a developmental writing class. We have seen student success—measured as passing the credit bearing class—more than double. Others are experimenting with combining courses, streamlining sequences, and giving students the skills they need in a college-level environment. This conference gives faculty and administrators a chance to hear about these approaches and to talk about ways to make these approaches more successful. We know that the structural approach is working, and this year we would like to spotlight ways that we can “deepen the pedagogy.”
