Dear Family and Friends of Dr. J. Alfred Smith Sr.,

We are elated to present the 2nd Annual J. Alfred Smith Sr. Lecture Series which will take place Saturday, October 26, 2013 at 8:30 A.M. at the Allen Temple Family Life Center in Oakland, California.

Our keynote speaker for this event will be Sister Addie Lorraine Walker, SSND, PhD.  Dr. Walker is an esteemed educator, leader and pioneer in her field as Director of the Sankofa Institute for African American Pastoral Leadership at the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, Texas.  The Sankofa Institute develops and supports African American pastoral leaders by providing opportunities for the intellectual, professional, and inspirational development of transformational leadership within the African American community.

The focus of the day will be “Moving from Endangerment to Empowerment.

Today African American people are perceived by social scientists as being an endangered species.  Political scientists on the left see African Americans as being disadvantaged people in need of compensatory assistance and those who on the right see African Americans in the words of Rudyard Kipling as being the white man’s burden or as Supreme Court Justice Scalia as a people inquest of entitlements.  Public education policy makers who are busy privatizing schools into profit making ventures that mis-educate black youth and the paucity of adequate medical services in the communities where the white poor and people of color reside are preserved by demonic design to perpetuate disparities of inequality in the nation.  Furthermore, the criminal justice practices that promote the New Jim Crow through the thriving Prison Industrial Complex and the seduction of the public into the sleep of apathy with the drug of sports and gaudy entertainment all help to contribute to societal endangerment.  The appetite of this endangerment feeds the fracturing of families with a steady diet of violence from the news and movies that spill over into the streets.

The mission of the Leadership Institute at Allen Temple through her broad based curriculum and the J. Alfred Smith, Sr. Lecture Series encourages dialogue and prepares persons with a faith based paradigm for moving from endangerment to empowerment.

We would be honored to have you join us.  Please register today.

Thank you for your ongoing encouragement and continued support!

Blessings,

Dr. Brenda Guess, Chancellor
