The program at CalSouthern’s 2013 Commencement Ceremony has generated interest from prospective students, members of the media and the public at large. All are invited to join CalSouthern graduates and their guests, university faculty and staff as they celebrate the CalSouthern’s Class of 2013. General admission tickets are complimentary.
Dr. Shaw, a member of the faculty in the university’s departments of psychology and criminal justice, is a nationally recognized scholar, educator, author and expert witness. His areas of expertise include adolescent violence, life-span development among inner-city youth and gang-related traumatic stress disorder. A sought-after speaker, he has appeared on Good Morning America, the Today Show, CBS News and The O’Reilly Factor, among many others. He is the author of the groundbreaking book, Jack and Jill, Why They Kill and has been honored by the California legislature for his research and writing on issues impacting inner-city youth and families.
A special highlight of the commencement ceremony, which is open to the public, will be the presentation of the 2013 CalSouthern Difference Award to Freddie Williams. A graduate of the university’s MA (Psychology) program and a current doctoral student at CalSouthern, Mr. Williams has overcome seemingly insurmountable odds—decades of addiction, an abusive father, poverty, incarceration, homelessness, HIV infection—to not only achieve sobriety and remarkable academic and professional success, but to tirelessly work to heal others’ lives through his innovative clinical work, motivational speaking and advocacy regarding substance abuse issues and HIV education and prevention. His story is as moving and inspirational as it is remarkable.
In addition, several other awards will be distributed to honor CalSouthern doctoral students, faculty and guests, including Dr. Jeffrey Zeig, world-renowned scholar, author and psychotherapist, who will accept the honorary title of Distinguished Professor in an emotional video presentation.
CalSouthern invites you to share in the celebration and mingle with the speakers, faculty, staff and other guests. It promises to be a spectacular event.
