For the last four years, the Bay Area Leadership Foundation (BALF) has partnered with the siblings of the late Terrence Thurmond to honor his memory through a scholarship fund dedicated to supporting deserving young students with financial need attend San Jose State. A businessman and sports enthusiast, Terry put himself through school at his beloved alma mater, San Jose State. It only seemed fitting for his memory to be rekindled through a scholarship to provide low-income youth in Richmond, the East and South Bay with scholarships, mentoring and the support needed to succeed in college. Since 2011, BALF has served over 180 youth with its programs.
Tony Thurmond, Terry's brother and West Contra Costa School Board trustee, sponsors an annual birthday party to raise funds for the scholarship. Tony has planned a wonderful evening Friday September 7th at the elegant Era Art Bar & Lounge in Oakland’s trendy Uptown District. He’s throwing a fantastic party this year, featuring none other than Latin jazz legend Pete Escovedo, and his brother, talented saxophonist Jerome Dawson.
Admittance to this event is free, but it's First Friday, and we expect to sell out, so register online today to get on the guest list! Cover charge kicks in at 10PM, so register AND arrive early.
We hope you will consider making a generous, 100% tax-deductible donation to BALF so this flame of hope and opportunity continues to burn brightly for underserved young scholars in our community.
Donations in excess of $1000 will be named as sponsors of the benefit, with our heartfelt gratitude. Call Marcy Straw at 510-622-7881 for more information or email email@example.com.
