Telling Garden Stories in the Digital Age: A Smithsonian Gardens/National Postal Museum Teacher Workshop

Spend a day utilizing Smithsonian collections and tools to solve a challenge connecting gardens and civic engagement—then make connections to your curriculum! Leave ready to empower your students to make a difference in their community.

Audience: Middle-school and high-school teachers and school garden educators

Date and Time: July 31st, 2014, 10 am - 3 pm

Location: National Postal Museum Byrne Loft

Fee: Free

Gardens connect local history to the natural world. Stamps connect design to communication. Join Smithsonian Gardens and the Smithsonian National Postal Museum for a one-day interdisciplinary workshop utilizing the Community of Gardens and Arago websites.

To start off the day, Mark Tebeau, Director of Public History at Arizona State University, will “dial in” virtually to discuss how the digital humanities is transforming teaching & learning in K-20 communities, as well as how we use the landscape—both built and natural environments—in our classrooms.

Next, it’s full STEAM ahead as you work in teams to solve a challenge, connecting local history, design, community green spaces, and persuasive writing. Explore Arago, the Postal Museum’s digital collections, for design inspiration and communication methods. Then use digital tools to create a persuasive story for the Community of Gardens digital archive. By the end of the workshop, you will have a plan for mobilizing your students to explore their local community through primary research and fieldwork.

Educators will receive documentation of their participation in the workshop for use towards continuing education requirements or Professional Learning Units. Registered participants will recieve a follow-up email with more detailed information about the workshop.
