Event Details

In honor of the Dalai Lama's historic visit to New Orleans, Techung and his band Lhasa Spirits join with Africa Brass in a musical celebration on May 18th, 8pm at the U.S. Mint.

Techung is a Tibetan folk and freedom singer/songwriter living in exile in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is best known for his performances of traditional Tibetan music, dance, and opera under the name Tashi Dhondup Sharzur.  Whether performing in traditional or contemporary styles, Techung's dual goals are to revive Tibetan music in the Tibetan community and to expose the rich performing cultural tradition of his homeland to the world community.

In recent years, Techung has had the honor to open for His Holiness the Dalai Lama's public speech in Costa Rica, Japan and USA. On February 3, 2009 Techung and his band Lhasa Spirits performed at the Carnegie Hall with prominent artists such as Philip Glass, Patti Smith and others.
Techung will  perform a short program for the Dalai Lama at the UNO Lakefront Arena, and we are blessed to have Techung and his band for an extended performance at the U.S. Mint.

To envision the sound of Africa Brass, close your eyes, and imagine the sound of West African drums connecting with American Jazz and ultimately falling in love with New Orleans brass.
From the spiritual Ubuntu with Matt Lemmler's Jazz Revival Band, to the impromptu throwdown with Big Chief Victor Harris, and Fi Yi Yi Indians at Treme 200, to the scintillating AfroCuban ensemble with Otra at Congo Square Fest, Africa Brass has been blessed to collaborate with some of  New Orleans' finest culturally driven ensembles. Its in the heat of these collaborations, that Africa Brass is able to give a powerful voice to the songs and rhythms of our ancestors.

Africa Brass is deeply honored to share a night of music with Techung and Lhasa Spirits in celebration of His Holiness The Dalai Lama.
