INTRODUCING OUR SPEAKERS
Baratunde Thurston is the CEO and company spokesmodel. He wrote the New York Times bestseller, How To Be Black, and served for five years as director of digital for the satirical news outlet, The Onion. When he’s not delivering keynote talks at gatherings such as SXSW Interactive, LeWeb, and Personal Democracy Forum, he writes the monthly back page column in Fast Company and contributes to the MIT Media Lab as a director’s fellow. He has advised the Obama White House, has more than 10 years experience in standup comedy, and more than 30 years experience being black.
Creative Director at Cultivated Wit
Brian Janosch is creative director and resident expert in beer and cheese. Brian has held several titles in media and comedy including writing, editing, project managing, product developing, web strategizing, and gerunding. Brian is presently a writer at large for The Onion, where he previously worked for four years as deputy managing editor coordinating the writers room through production of books, videos, and physical pieces of paper placed in boxes on the street.
Product Director at Cultivated Wit
Craig Cannon is product director and outdoorsman at large. Craig served as graphics editor for The Onion and campaign manager for the How To Be Black marketing campaign, contributing to the planning and largely implementing the digital strategy behind much of the book’s success. He’s a graduate of New York University where he served as president of the campus satire magazine and, for his thesis, designed an eReading platform.
Michael Chasen is an entrepreneur who is focused in the technology, education and SoLoMo (Social Local Mobile) space. After co-founding ed-tech focused Blackboard, Inc., Michael led the company as CEO for 15 years - taking it public in 2004 and successfully selling it to Providence Equity Partners for $1.7 billion in 2011. His most recent venture is SocialRadar (www.socialradar.com) where he serves as Founder and CEO. He is an investor and advisor to several companies that are focused on using technology to improve education as well as several start-up ventures and mature companies across the technology spectrum.
Jay is helping to build a game-changing American car company. Relentlessly passionate about cars and the industry which surrounds them, Jay's personal rides have included a 1991 BMW 535, 1971 Mercedes 300SL, a 1996 Dodge Viper R/T10, 1994 Chevrolet 1500 with hydraulic dump-bed, a 2002 Honda Element, and now he drives a 1971 Mercedes 280SL.
Prior to starting Local Motors Jay served for 6 years in the United States Marine Corps, where he was an Infantry Company Commander. He has also worked as a consultant for McKinsey & Co., as an investment analyst at Ewing & Partners, and at a startup medical device company in the People’s Republic of China. Jay serves as the Chief Investment Officer and director of the RBR Foundation, a philanthropic foundation focused on education and healthcare. He is a graduate of Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, and holds an MBA from Harvard Business School (Baker Scholar). He lives in Arizona with his wife, Susannah, and four sons, John, Charles, Houston, and Ralph.
