As a part of World Breastfeeding Week, please join NJBMEI and two nationally recognized experts for an exciting day long seminar and workshop on the diagnosis and management of breast pain during lactation as well as a workshop on breast massage and hand expression.

Educational credits:


Attendees will receive 6 hours each of CERP, CME, and/or CEU credits where appropriate.

 

Target Audience

 This activity is designed for physicians, lactation consultants, and other healthcare providers who care for mothers and their children.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  1. Review differential of acute breastfeeding related pain.
  2. Review diagnosis, and treatment of engorgement 
  3. Review diagnosis and treatment of mastitis, including antibiotic use.
  4. Review plugged duct and abscess management. 
  5. Present the latest research findings on the role of therapeutic breast massage for breastfeeding mothers
  6. Explain techniques for hand expression
  7. Describe and discuss hands on techniques for therapeutic breast massage in breastfeeding mothers.
  8. Describe two main principles that include a) encouraging mobilization of fluid with massage toward the axillae to facilitate lymph circulation and b) alternating massage and hand expression to facilitate milk removal.(Videos and case reviews)
  9. Review microbiology and summarize research on infectious causes of breast pain with particular focus on yeast vs. bacterial infection.
  10. Understand differential diagnosis for chronic breast pain.
  11. Discuss treatment of chronic breastfeeding pain. 
  12. Demonstrate hands-on techniques that provide a simple, readily accessible method that can be easily taught to mothers and lactation consultants

We need 5 lactating volunteers to act as models during the workshop. Volunteers will be provided with free registration to the conference.
