In February 2013 my friend David began experiencing numbness in his feet, within weeks the numbness had climbed up his thighs, toward his vital organs in his chest, sending him to the ER. David was admitted to the hospital for treatment and testing to determine what was causing these symptoms. Fast-forward two months in April 2013 David heard the words from his doctor that he feared most, “Mr. Whitford, you have Multiple Sclerosis.” At the age of 53 my friend David was diagnosed with “Late on-setMS”. Late on-set MS is aggressive in nature, causing symptoms such as paralysis and memory loss to progress quickly in patients diagnosed with it. Ironically, David’s mom was diagnosed with MS when she was in her 30’s andpassed away from MS complications at the age of 54. David watched his mom suffer with MS for 20 years and is very aware of the struggles that lay ahead of him. In a feeble attempt to help my friend in the only tangible way I knew how, I started “Team Davey” to raise money and ride with the MS Bay to Bay bike tour from Irvine to San Diego over two days in October. All donations made to Team Davey go directly to the National MS Society, Pacific Coast Chapter to help with on-going treatments and research advancements for those livingwith MS.
$15 per rider, the ride is made up of 3 distances, a 20 mile, 54 mile & 34 mile route starting from Empire Bikes Chino. Map of the rides are posted below.
