The Apollo Theater and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture of NYPL are both remarkable landmarks of the Harlem community that hold its rich history within their walls yet have reputations that are global in reach. Apollo Historic Tours connect the past, the present and the future of the legendary venue, revealing the significant contributions of African-Americans and Latinos to the birth of global popular culture.  The digital resources of the Schomburg Center make its wide and deep collections easily accessible to teachers and students alike. Come for an evening to explore these resources and see how they can support your curriculum.

 

Apollo Education Program The Apollo Theater Education Program extends the Apollo’s commitment to enhancing the life of the community.  The Education Program focuses on four distinct areas of learning and engagement: residencies, workshops and tours for schools; curriculum materials aligned to state and national learning standards and study guides derived from the Theater’s history; career development for teens and adults through the Apollo Theater Academy; and discussions and lectures for the public that highlight the history of the Apollo and its impact on American art, culture and entertainment.

 

Education at the Schomburg CenterThe Schomburg Center has an unyielding commitment to the educational empowerment of young people exercised through year-round programs and classes tailored for students and educators. Public education offerings include daytime programs for school groups, Saturday classes for middle and high school students, workshops for teachers and college faculty, and seminars for undergraduate and graduate students.

About the Apollo Education Program
The Apollo Theater Education Program extends the Apollo’s commitment to enhancing the life of the community.  The Education Program focuses on four distinct areas of learning and engagement: residencies, workshops and tours for schools; curriculum materials aligned to state and national learning standards and study guides derived from the Theater’s history; career development for teens and adults through the Apollo Theater Academy; and discussions and lectures for the public that highlight the history of the Apollo and its impact on American art, culture and entertainment.

About the Apollo Theater
Since introducing the first Amateur Night contests in 1934, the Apollo Theater has played a major role in the emergence of innovative musical genres including jazz, swing, bebop, R&B, gospel, blues, soul and hip-hop. Based on its cultural significance and architecture, the Apollo Theater received state and city landmark designation in 1983 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
