Event Details

Each year the Teaching Commons Fall Forum brings together faculty from across DePaul's colleges and schools to connect with one another and share strategies for teaching and learning. The Fall Forum kicks off the academic year with an event focused on pedagogy, complementing the annual Teaching and Learning Conference in the spring.

Assessing for Learning: Building a Sustainable Commitment Across the Institution

The theme of this year's Fall Forum is "Facilitating Student Success through the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning." Peggy Maki, author of Assessing for Learning: Building a Sustainable Commitment Across the Institution (Stylus, 2010), will focus on how faculty members can cultivate a culture of scholarly inquiry to improve student learning.

Teaching and learning has long been at the heart of DePaul’s mission. The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, or SoTL, is an opportunity for faculty to deepen and actualize DePaul University’s commitment to academic quality and innovation in education. Guest speaker Peggy Maki will begin the day with a keynote exploring the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and the ways that this type of scholarly inquiry can enhance student learning. During lunch, three SoTL scholars from DePaul--Heather Jagman (Libraries), Robert Rotenberg (Anthropology), and Amber Settle (Computing)--will talk about how they got started researching what and how students learn.

Peggy Maki’s interactive afternoon workshop will help faculty understand the steps involved in SoTL research, as well as how they can easily incorporate SoTL into what they are already doing in their classrooms. Whether faculty engage in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning by immersing themselves in the literature or conducting their own publishable research, they can use SOTL to consider what teaching practices might facilitate enduring student learning.
